The Swinging Friar
The mascot (and team name) of the San Diego Padres comes from San Diego's history. The southern California city was founded by Spanish friars in 1769, and the team has used the friar mascot for at least the last 50 years.
Mr. Met
This wacky mascot, a baseball-headed human figure, first appeared with the New York Mets when the team moved to Shea Stadium in 1964. He sometimes used to show up at games with "Lady Met" and their children, the "Little Mets."
Paws
The Detroit Tigers have been playing baseball since April 25, 1901, though Detroit has had a baseball team since 1881! Their mascot, Paws, is a wild and wooly tiger.
Billy the Marlin
Billy the Marlin, the mascot of the Florida Marlins, gets his name from the fact that the marlin is from the species of fish known as "billfish." Billy competes in a virtual waterboat race during every home game.
Screech
Screech, the mascot for the Washington Nationals, is just a hatchling. He made his first appearance in 2005, after nine-year-old fourth grade student Glenda Gutierrez designed the mascot and won a contest sponsored by the team.
The Phillie Phanatic
According to the Philadelphia Phillies, their mascot -- the Phillie Phanatic -- has clumsy feet, a gawking neck and a slight case of body odor. His favorite foods are soft pretzels, hoagies, cheesesteak, scrapple and Tastykakes, and he was born in the Galapagos Islands.
The Bird
The Baltimore Orioles first took their name in 1954, though other Batlimore baseball teams had been using the name since the late 1800s. "The Bird" is an oriole, which is also Maryland's state bird.
Sluggerrr
Sluggerrr, mascot for the Kansas City Royals, is a lion -- the King of Beasts. A fitting mascot for a "royal" team. On game day, Sluggerrr likes to shoot hot dogs into the stands with an air cannon between innings.
Stomper
The mascot of the Oakland Athletics, Stomper likes to enter the stadium on a little red car with music from "The Jungle Book" playing in the background. Stomper's parents are Stella & Stanley Elle Phant.
Fredbird
Fredbird (a walking cardinal, or "red bird") is the mascot for the St. Louis Cardinals, the current World Series Champions.
