On Friday, October 8, 2010, Rachel Juhnke, the San Diego Zoo's Arctic Ambassador, got up close and personal with Chinook, a polar bear at the San Diego Zoo. The special meet-and-greet gave the local high school student a chance to spend time with a polar bear as well as San Diego Zoo polar bear keepers before heading off to a Teen Leadership Camp sponsored by Polar Bears International. The week-long camp is located in the Arctic tundra near Churchill, Manitoba. Juhnke was selected as the Zoo's Arctic Ambassador following an application and interview process. She will join 17 other students from the US, Canada, and Australia to study polar bears and learn how they can help conserve the threatened species. PBI is a non-profit organization dedicated to worldwide conservation of the polar bear. The San Diego Zoo has sent seven San Diego-area students to PBI's Teen Leadership Camp since 2004, because of its role as a PBI Arctic Ambassador Center Zoo. These centers focus on animal well-being and enrichment, take a leadership role in stewardship and carbon reduction efforts in their communities, and participate in PBI polar bear research efforts.
