Hedwig
Hedwig is the name of Harry Potter's owl, played by a male snowy owl. Hedwig is a gift to Harry from Hagrid in the Sorcerer's Stone, purchased in Diagon Alley while shopping for supplies for Harry's first year at Hogwarts. Owls are used by witches and wizards primarily as message carriers.

Scabbers is Ron's pesky pet rat that was passed down from his older brother, Percy. We learn in the Prisoner of Azkaban that Scabbers isn't just a common garden rat and has a missing toe from one of his forepaws.

Mrs. Norris
Mrs. Norris is owned by Argus Filch, the unpopular caretaker of Hogwarts. Filch frequently calls Mrs. Norris "my sweet." She acts as a hallway monitor and spy for Filch. She has been known to follow Hagrid everywhere, under Filch's orders.

Fawkes
Fawkes is an extremely magical creature, possessing a number of magical abilities and even saved Harry's life in the Chamber of Secrets. Both Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter's wands are made with Phoenix tail feathers. Whenever Fawkes dies, he bursts into flame and is reborn out of the ashes as a baby Phoenix. As an adult, he's about swan-sized and very beautiful.

Crookshanks
Crookshanks is Hermione Granger's pet cat. Hermione bought Crookshanks from a shop in Diagon Alley out of sympathy, as nobody wanted him due to his squashed-looking face. Crookshanks had a habit of chasing Scabbers, Ron's rat. This caused a great deal of fighting between Ron and Hermione in the the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Buckbeak
Buckbeak is an enormous animal, which is a hybrid of a bird and horse. In the Prisoner of Azkaban, Hagrid explains that hippogriffs are very calm, powerful giants, but demand respect. One must bow and keep eye contact before approaching.

The scary Basilisk is the monster that inhabited the Chamber of Secrets in the second book and was controlled by Tom Marvolo Riddle. It attacked several Muggle-borns after they looked into its killer eyes.
