  • Studying Dolphin Communication

Scientists study dolphins to find out how and why dolphins communicate with one another and the signals they use. Researchers also compare the behaviors of dolphins in captivity with those in the wild.

  • Diving with Dolphins

Kathleen is the director of the Dolphin Communication Project at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. After many years of studying dolphins, she has found that they are complex social creatures and communicate using postures, gestures, and sounds but they don't really have a language.

  • Dolphin Study

Studying dolphins requires a lot of data collection. Kelly Melillo, a graduate student, works on identifying dolphins, where they are at the time, how many dolphins are in a pod or group and what they are doing at the time of observation.

  • Dolphin Duty

Studying the dolphins is a lot of hard work and sometimes you get sea sick! Darcie Blanding spends three months researching in the waters around Bimini to help update a photo identification catalog of 77 individual dolphins.

  • Return to the Titanic

Dr. Robert Ballard discovered the resting place of the Titanic over 20 years ago. Watch this video to find out why his team of scientists went back to the site and what they hoped to find.
(This video is a Partisan Pictures/Odyssey Production. The executive producers are Robert Ballard and Peter Schnall.)

  • Catalina Martinez

Catalina Martinez is a Physical Scientist at NOAA. She studied science as a second career and loves it. Throughout this expedition the team used High Definition cameras to go back to the site of the Titanic to compare the images that were taken when the ship was discovered in 1986.

  • Dwight Coleman

Dwight is an Oceanographer at the University of Rhode Island. He studies the geology of the land on the sea floor. Using thousands of images, the team is able to create a mosaic or quilt of the wreckage and debris field.

  • John Bunton

John is an engineer. He works to get the video feeds to all the people involved with the expedition. He loves to learn new things, and working with video systems that are always changing keeps him interested!

  • Ancient Volcanoes

Dr. Robert Ballard and scientists dive 1500 ft. in the Aegean Sea in Greece to find out the mysteries of the Thera volcano which erupted 3600 years ago. Watch as the team uses robots to scan the bottom of the volcano's caldera for clues to the power of the second largest eruption in human history.

  • Haraldur Sigurdsson

Meet a volcanologist, a scientist who studies volcanoes. Dr. Sigurdsson grew up in Iceland where there are lots of volcanoes and has spent years climbing into and around volcanoes all over the world to find out what's left and if they might blow again!

  • Katy Croff

Katy Croff is an archaeological oceanographer and is one of the scientists researching the impact of the powerful Thera volcano in Greece!

  • Steven Carey

Each volcano is unique and has its own personality much like humans, according to geologist and volcanologist Steve Carey. He became fascinated by volcanoes when he visited the Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington State after it erupted in 1980.
