Re-discovering the Titanic
The Titanic was one of the most luxurious ships ever built and it was said to be unsinkable. It was bound from England to New York, when it hit an iceberg in the cold Labrador Sea in the North Atlantic on April 14, 1912. It was a shocking tragedy that claimed the lives of 1500 passengers. About 700 passengers boarded life boats and were rescued. It only took 90 minutes for the grand ship to sink.
Twenty years after Dr. Ballard discovered the wreckage of the Titanic, a team of scientists dove 2.5 miles down into the frigid waters using sophisticated equipment to look at how the ship has deteriorated due to natural factors and human salvaging. They discovered that the Titanic is crumbling faster than anyone expected. The question is how do we best preserve the wreck and artifacts for future generations? Should it be raised and put in a museum, or should it be left where it sank? Should "pirates" or treasure hunters be able to remove objects from the site? Dr. Ballard hopes to find agreement among nations to preserve the ship and its contents in its present location for the future. What do you think?
