Life is Good in Costa Rica!
KOL Expeditions and the Blue Zones Quest continues into another Blue Zone, areas of the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives. In Nicoya, Costa Rica, Dan Buettner and his team of researchers will try to uncover the reasons there are so many centenarians, people over 100 years old, living here! What are the people doing or not doing that makes them so healthy and live so long!
Day 1
The team has arrived and started their research into why Costa Ricans live on average eight years longer than most Americans and many live to be over 100 years old. Meet the team and some of the amazing people. One centenarian can still play the guitar!
Day 2
Don Faustino is 102 years old and still takes a weekly trip to the market. How has he lived to be so old and healthy? Enter the Blue Zones to find out what the Costa Ricans eat, how they live and the other factors that lead to a long healthy live.
Day 3
Meet 91-year-old Aureliano! He lives with his wife, daughter and lots of animals. While there isn't one single reason that he has lived such a long life, living with a loving family seems to be an important factor for longevity. He also bounces back from hardship and eats a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
Day 4
Today we go to see how tortillas are made. Tortillas are very important to Costa Ricans. They don't feel that they have had a proper meal without a tortilla.
Day 5
Today the team visits Panchita, who turned 100 years old in November 2006. She is an energetic woman who lives alone and chops her own firewood! Even though she is poor, she cooks up a nice meal to share with Dan Buettner and his video crew. One thing the researchers have noticed is that all the centenarians are likable, compassionate and social people.
Day 6
Learn more about the foods that the people in this region eat. Beans and corn tortillas as well as rice, seem to be a healthy low fat, high protein link to longevity.
Day 7
Meet a couple who has been together for 67 years and find out the importance of faith and religion in their lives and for other centenarians.
Day 8
Meet 12-year-old Jose! He lives in Costa Rica with a large extended family. In fact, everyone in the village is related to one another. Every afternoon after school he works in a restaurant with his parents and he when he visits his Grandpa, he even gets to drive the truck!
Day 9
Today we head to the mountains in search of the culture of longevity. We meet a farmer with chickens and cows and who grows his own corn and beans. The life here simple and there isn't any electricity. The people are in bed at 8 p.m.
Day 10
Photographer Gianluca and Quest leader Dan hang out with cowboys to find out what they do and what they eat to make them live such long lives. Besides their typically healthy diet of corn torillas and beans, these men have strong social ties to one another and faith, which are all important ingredients for longevity!
