Costa Rica

Blue Zones are areas of the world where people live longer. Why is Costa Rica a blue zone? We hope to find out whether the place itself has an impact on longevity. But what is Costa Rica like?

The country is located in Central America and is sandwiched between Nicaragua and Panama. Costa Rica has frequent rain which makes the land very fertile. The main agricultural products are coffee, pineapples and bananas.

This expedition will take us to an area of Costa Rica called Nicoya. Look at the map to find its location.

Meet the Researchers in Costa Rica
Dan Buettner, Quest leader. He believes "that modern-day expeditions have to educate; they should somehow add to our body of knowledge and share a sense of adventure." He has three Guinness World Records for cycling.
Dr. Luis Rosero-Bixby, Costa Rican demographer and holds a Ph.D from University of Michigan. Dr. Rosero found the Blue Zone inside of Costa Rica.
Gianni Pes, MD, Longevity Researcher and is Research Assistant, Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Sassari in Italy.

Michel Poulain, is the Quest demographer and holds a Ph.D in demography. He verifies the ages of the centenarians.
