Aviles got hit while he was swinging at a pitch from rookie Armando Galarraga in the top of the seventh. Aviles immediately collapsed to the ground, writhing in pain as he held his hand. The ball traveled a few feet into fair territory. Detroit catcher Dane Sardinha picked it up and tagged Aviles for the final out of the inning.
