The Boys of Varsity Fanclub have arrived. Thomas Fiss, Jayk Purdy, Bobby Edner, David Lei Brandt, and Drew Scott make up the newest all-boy singing group in music. Varsity Fanclub is ready for the big time... a male vocal group who can both dance and sing and write their own material. For Varsity Fanclub, it's all about entertaining their fans. 'That's the #1 thing for us,' says Jayk. 'When we step on stage, we don't want it to come off as just another performance. We want it to seem we're putting on a show for each and every member of that audience. We're not just going through the motions. We’re going to entertain you.' They sat in their van one morning and was willing to talk with us about music, fans, and pizza. Their first CD will come out Oct. 28.
VFC: We're all here. We’re all in the van right now.
KOL: How's New York?
VFC: We haven't been to New York yet. We'll be in New York City I think in 4 days. We're actually in Connecticut right now, then Boston for the next 3 days, then New York. We're doing an open house party in Boston.
KOL: Do your fans show you love where ever you go?
VFC: Yes, they do. They are always so cool. They have signs for us. They make us bracelets and little gifts, t-shirts. They're awesome!
KOL: How long have you guys known each other?
VFC: We've been a group for a year and half almost. Almost 2 years. We all live in a house together. We get along totally well.
KOL: You guys feel like family yet?
VFC: We're really good friends. We're like a big family.
KOL: In that case, who decides the toppings when you order a pizza?
VFC: We actually all order different pizzas.
VFC-Bobby: I like to get the Hawaiian pizza.
VFC: We basically order whatever. There's always extra for leftovers.
KOL: How many times a day do you get to rehearse?
VFC-David: We have a dance studio at our house, in the back area. We all just rehearse like everyday. Sometimes we do like from 10 AM to 10 PM.
KOL: What do you guys do when you're not rehearsing or performing?
VFC: We hang out like normal guys. We play basketball and other sports. We sleep. Sleep is our favorite.
VFC-Drew: It's hard to get sleep when some people are knocking on your door and giving you prank phone calls at 3 AM.
KOL: Is that true?
VFC-Drew: Last night, Bobby decided to run around the hotel, knock on everybody's door and prank call everybody. And give us wake-up calls at 3 in the morning.
KOL: How much effort do each of you get to put in your CD?
VFC-Jayk: Being new artists, we're actually given a lot of creative freedom on our first record. Drew has 6 songs he's written or co-wrote. A few of us have a few songs that we co-wrote on the album.
KOL: Any song on the CD that you like?
VFC-Jayk: I like this song called 'Love in the Club.' I’m a big fan of 'Future Love.'
KOL: Who does your choreography? You guys got some great dance moves.
VFC-Drew: Our choreographer Richard Jackson.
KOL: What's your van like? Do you guys have it tricked out?
VFC: Oh yeah, we have a chrome rims. :-P It's a really cool beige. It's got like 20 bags in the back, cause we have like 4 bags each.
KOL: 4 bags each! You guys pack heavy.
VFC: We have a lot of shoes. We have a photo shoot in New York, so we had to bring some stuff from LA that we wanted to wear. We don't always trust the stylist at the shoot.
KOL: Who decides what goes into your music videos?
VFC-Drew: We all have our own ideas we put in the plot. We're shooting the music video for 'Future Love' in 2 weeks. Our choreographer came up with the concept. It's a really cool concept. And you just got to wait till the video comes out.
KOL: You can't give us a little hint of what to expect from the 'Future Love' music video?
VFC: It's just very futuristic. Ooooh.
KOL: On the road, what do you guys eat?
VFC-Drew: Apple pies from McDonald's like every 10 minutes.
KOL: Anything you'd like to say to your fans?
