Return of the Sk8ter Gurl
Avril Lavigne took some time away from her tour to chat with KOL about where she's going, her music and even the Jonas Brothers. Her third album has been getting a lot of radio play in America and in her home country of Canada. She's one of the biggest rock stars in the world! Read our chat with her below.
KOL: How’ve you been on tour?
Avril: I've been home the last couple of weeks, and I’m about to go to Europe on Monday for 2 months. I'm going to start in the UK.
KOL: Are you going to do another tour in the US?
Avril: Yeah, just a quick North American wrap up. I have 8 shows in the US and 8 shows in Canada.
KOL: We hear you'll be joined by the Jonas Brothers?
Avril: I'm taking them to Europe with me. They're going to open for me in Europe. They'’re really big here in the US.
KOL: What do you do when you're not on tour?
Avril: I guess I've been taking it easy. I've just been hanging out. I had to cancel the last 6 shows of my tour because I lost my voice, so I came home and I didn't talk, didn't go out, laid low at my house and saw a couple friends. It's weird—when you're not at home for so long you just want to stay home. I didn't really go out—just chilled out.
KOL: Did you get to spend time with your husband Deryck Whibley, lead singer of Sum 41?
Avril: Yup. He was here for a bit.
KOL: Why haven't you ever toured with Sum 41?
Avril: Because we have different fan bases. Well, in America it's a different fan base. We could tour together in Japan probably.
KOL: Do you like doing international shows?
Avril: Yes. I love being on tour in Europe and Asia. It's good in Europe because they do tour busses, North America does tour busses, but anywhere else in the world you have to fly. It's a little harder to do that, to fly every single day.
KOL: Do you write music while on tour?
Avril: No. Writing for me, I feel like I have to come home and I have nothing going on and then I can focus.
KOL: You have so many different looks in your music video 'Best D*** Thing,' who decides what you wear?
Avril: Me. I'll be like, 'hey, I want a cheerleader look' or 'I want a pink wig.' I totally talk to my hair people about what I want to do. With all my videos I always have my own idea about what I want to do, and the director just puts his treatment together and makes it happen.
KOL: Your glitter microphone in 'Best D*** Thing' is awesome!
Avril: Yeah, I have pink ones and a black one like that.
KOL: Have you always played music since you were a child?
Avril: Yes. We had a drum kit in the house and an acoustic, an electric and a base guitar, and my dad got me a microphone for Christmas, so we had a band set in the basement. That's how come I can play all band instruments, because I grew up with them in the house. I play piano, drums and guitar on stage.
KOL: Are you going back into the studio anytime soon?
Avril: When I get off tour, I'll probably do that. And I'll probably focus on movies and stuff. I got a clothing line coming out. It's called Abbey Dawn. It's actually launching at Kohl's in the US for back to school in July.
KOL: What movies are you going to do?
Avril: Well, I don't have anything yet. But I do want to focus on that when I get off tour, because there’ve been some opportunities, but it didn’t really fit with my schedule unfortunately. Being on tour, you can’t do anything else.
KOL: Do you want to say anything to your fans?
Avril: Thanks to my fans for being supportive over the years, because I'm on my third record, and I’m still getting awesome opportunities. I feel like they grow with me. My fans rock!

Avril Lavigne is a Canadian and was discovered singing in a bookstore in Ontario. By age sixteen she had signed with Arista Records and released her first CD Let Go. Her first singles including 'Complicated' and 'Sk8er Boi' were instant hits. The punk-rocker followed up with two more CDs- Under My Skin and The Best Thing.
