Matt Shively Interview
KOL Chats With the 'True Jackson, VP' Star

KOLSteph: Congrats on the new show. Can you tell us how you got involved with the True Jackson VP project?
MattShively: I did it how a majority of other actors who are trying to get a job do. I got sent the audition and I went in and did the audition and got the producers call back and then they told me I didn't get the part. And then for two weeks I sat around doing nothing and all of a sudden they called me back and said I was going to get tested for it. After that it was a locked in thing.
KOLSteph: So at first you thought you didn't get it?
MattShively: They had emailed me that I did not get it and that they were going for younger. And I guess they changed their mind once they cast Keke.
KOLSteph: Would you say you are like your character Ryan in anyway?
MattShively: He is very outgoing and I am very outgoing at times. I would say I am more mature than him although I can bring that immature side out which is exactly like Ryan. I would also say when it comes to jokes he is a very hit and miss guy and I am usually about the same.
KOLSteph: What's been the best part about working on the show?
MattShively: It's the show entirely. It's an amazing show. It has amazing writing. We have had amazing directors and the cast. It was all cast perfectly for who everybody is. There is not one weak link. Everybody has been amazing. The best part has been getting to know people and getting to find out what this business has to offer. And getting to learn the background things. Because you definitely don't see anything that goes on backstage when you are watching a show.
KOLSteph: I understand you tape in front of a live studio audience. Has there been any silly moments or funny mess ups?
MattShively: One of the lines in front of the live audience was if I had that she would be my girlfriend. But in front of the live audience I said if I had that she would be my boyfriend. And it was a really embarrassing moment because I can't believe I just said that. The audience reacted really well to it and the audience thought it was hilarious. And it got a laugh which was good but I still have to live with saying that for the rest of my life.
KOLSteph: The show is all about running a fashion label and the world of fashion. Are you a fashion conscious guy? Or have you become more because of the show?
MattShively: Me personally I have become a lot more fashion conscious. When I didn't have this show I would walk around the streets in sweats and a shirt. And now I wear jeans and nice shoes- Vans usually – and long sleeve shirts rolled up. I think I have become a lot more fashion conscious. Other than that I have never been too big on fashion. I like to try and look good but it's never been that big of a thing for me. I am who I am and I don't care what people think of that.
KOLSteph: What's your favorite item of clothing?
MattShively: My beanies. I couldn't tell you why I wear them in 95 degree weather. I think it's cause I don't like having long hair and it kind of puts my hair down and tames it so I usually never leave the house without a beanie. That and shoes. I literally have twelve or thirteen pairs of the same pair of Vans at my house. They are all the same style just different colors. I adore Vans- that's all I ever buy really.
KOLSteph: If you could run any company like True was with the fashion line, what company would you want to run?
MattShively: Any studio. I would want to run Paramount Pictures. Any kind of motion picture studio is probably what I would go for.
KOLSteph: You have done stage, film and TV – is there one you like best?
MattShively: In a sense they are all 100% different. As of now I enjoy TV a lot more. I did film but it was very minor stuff so I didn't get the full experience of it. So you ask me in four years the same question, I sure hope I can give you a different answer. As of now I would have to say TV just because it kind of goes with theater because you have to overdo some things and I love being able to perform in front of a live audience. And so far everyone's nice and there is never really drama around it. So far I think TV.
KOLSteph: If you could work with anyone in the business who would it be?
MattShively: Shia LaBeouf. He is amazing. He can do anything. Even if I was bad, he would overdo me so it would be OK. They would forget my bad performance. And if I was good then it would set really high because everyone goes and sees his films. He probably wouldn't like me though because I would ask him too many questions.
KOLSteph: Any other projects in the works?
MattShively: I do not have any projects in the works but I would die to be in 'Footloose' with Zac Efron. That is the next thing that I am going to try my best to get into.
KOLSteph: Now let's do On the Spot where we give you two things and you pick your favorite.
Summer or winter?
MattShively: Winter- I love cold weather and can't stand this weather. I look better in fat winter suits than I do in shorts and a tank top.
Vanilla or chocolate?
MattShively: Chocolate- vanilla is too bland for me.
Video games or board games?
MattShively: Video Games- Call of Duty is my favorite but I don't play video games that much. But I play them more than I play board games.
French Fries or Pizza?
MattShively: French Fries. I am not much of a pizza person. I have to eat the best pizza.
City living or country living?
MattShively: I am going to have to say city living. I love the hustle and bustle of everything and going to bed with cars flying by my window.
Peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and marshmallow fluff?
MattShively: Peanut butter and marshmallow fluff – I don’t like PB&J.
Heard of Fluffer Nutters?
MattShively: I have not but it must be better than PB&J.
KOLSteph: Well thanks for talking with us and good luck with the show!
