Lucas Grabeel Interview

KOLSteph: Can you tell me a little bit about 'The Adventures of Food Boy' and how you got involved in the project?
Lucas Grabeel: Story wise 'Food Boy' is about this kid named Ezra who feels like he has his life pretty much planned out and finds out one day that his whole life is going to change because he has developed this ability to produce food from his hands. And now he is a super hero and he has to make a choice if he is going to live a life of expected, financially-secure future or go the road less traveled and be a super hero and change the world and use his gift to influence people in a really great way. It’s a great coming of age kind of story.
I auditioned for the project because a friend of mine told me about it. Olesya Rulin, we’ve done four Disney movies together, and she said she was doing this project and I read the script and I loved it. I auditioned for it and I booked it. And then she was unable to do the movie because of scheduling. Then Brittany Curran came in. I got to meet her and she was fantastic. And we had a grand old time filming it.
KOLSteph: Would you say you are like Ezra in anyway?
Lucas Grabeel: No, not really. I would hope not because he is viewed as a nerd. He is very obsessed with school, academics and colleges and being accepted to a very prestigious college. It’s not me at all. I didn’t go to college.
KOLSteph: From what I have seen of the movie it seems like at times it got pretty messy on the set.
Lucas Grabeel: Yes, that was one thing that was always a guarantee that when I showed up for work I would come home either sticky, smelly or both.
KOLSteph: Did you have a lot of food fights on the set? It looked like there was a lot of food flying everywhere.
Lucas Grabeel: Yeah, there is one food fight that is supposed to be the grossest food fight ever. And it definitely lives up to its name. It's pretty crazy.
KOLSteph: What would you say is the best or weirdest thing that came out of your hands while you were shooting the movie?
Lucas Grabeel: Oh man, everything. Everything from Gatorade to peanuts to mustard to pastrami. A whole plethora of things.
KOLSteph: What's your favorite food?
Lucas Grabeel: Sandwiches. I eat like two sandwiches a day.
KOLSteph: Any particular kind?
Lucas Grabeel: Yeah, sometimes I have the same one but usually I mix it up. It’s always some weird combination of meat and cheese.
KOLSteph: Any funny moments on the set?
Lucas Grabeel: Jeff Braine, another young fellow in the movie, who is hilarious, he plays Ezra’s best friend, and I we’re on the golf course on the first day of shooting, and I am meeting him and were about to shoot the scene and all that. And the director is like ok, you have to line up and take a shot. You guys can both play golf, right? And Jeff is like, oh yeah, I used to play all the time and I wasn’t on a team but I can handle my own. And I was like yeah, I am not really that good at all. The first swing Jeff hits it and it goes two feet and rolls to the side. We were just doing the opening shot with us hitting balls and not getting anything. It was really funny as our first breaking the ice blooper. What was funnier is every time after that I was the one who hit it off to the side. And we are both fighting for the captain of the golf team and neither of us can hit a golf ball. It was pretty funny.
KOLSteph: If you could have any super power what would you pick?
Lucas Grabeel: I ask this to all my friends about seven times a day. It's like the most common question I ask people because it always changes. What do I want to do today? I have a whole lot of errands to run so I want super speed and ability to walk through walls so I don't even have to open any doors. Today for me I would have the techno-pathy. It's the control of computers and machines. Drive the car without touching it or fix a cell phone or computer.
KOLSteph: I bet that is a power that a lot of people would want.
Lucas Grabeel: Yeah, I mean think about it, you can basically control the world. If you could control every electronic machine... you could go to the ATM and spit out as much money as you wanted for yourself. Make all the traffic lights work in your favor.
KOLSteph: How was it working with the cast? I know you mentioned Brittany and some of your fellow HSM castmates as well?
Lucas Grabeel: Ryne Sanborn and McCall Clark were both in it. It was cool. I have made eight films in Utah so I have worked with everyone tons of times. So you always see the familiar faces. It's like a little Hollywood over there. They have a group of people that have a thriving business of making films there. It's great people making great movies.
