KOL Chats With the 'Wizards of Waverly Place' Star
KOLSteph: Hi Jennifer. Welcome to KOL.
Jennifer: Thanks, I'm happy to be here.
KOLSteph: Tell us a little bit about Wizards of Waverly Place. Are you filming? In between filming?
Jennifer: Well we are on hiatus. We are at the end of our hiatus. Which I can't tell you is such a god scent. I am so happy to be almost done. We start shooting the second season in the beginning of May. So I am pumped about that. I am very excited to get back to work.
KOLSteph: So take us back, how did you find out you got the part of Harper?
Jennifer: It was very funny. I had done previous work with Disney and got the call when I was back in my hometown in Texas to fly out the next day. It was very sudden. I went to network for Harper and three days later they called and offered me the part. It was nice. All very abrupt -the entire process. It was so sudden and the pace of the process was fast.
KOLSteph: How would you say you are like/not like your character?
Jennifer: It's hard to say. Harper is highly strung. When things don't go perfectly she gets bent out of shape. I would like to think I am not so tightly wound. I am pretty laid back. If things don't work out I'm like whatever. I think we are alike in that we are both a little zany. We can both be pretty crazy at times.
KOLSteph: I know Harper likes to make her own clothes is that something you do or are you a shopper?
Jennifer: I am both. I actually got a sewing machine for my birthday which I am super excited about. I made this really tacky jersey tank top that was supposed to be a dress but it's wearable so I am proud of it. I like to shop too. I am a sewer and shopper simultaneously.
KOLSteph: Where do you like to shop?
Jennifer: I really like Saks but I don't spend money there because I can't afford most of the stuff. I am sure the clerks really don't like me because I will shop and then buy the cheapest thing they have. I love to look at shoes. I love fashion and art. I think they are interlinked. I see fashion as art. I love looking at the way dresses are tapered together and how they flow and how shoes are basically sculpted. I love high ended stuff.
KOLSteph: Are you a Project Runaway fan?
Jennifer: I am a huge Project Runway fan! What did you think of Christian winning? He was who I was routing for.
KOLSteph: It was great. He is from Maryland which is right by me so that’s cool.
KOLSteph: Back to Wizards, what is it like to work with Selena Gomez and the rest of the cast?
Jennifer: They are all fantastic. I have a special place in my heart for them. I think of them like family. I can talk to the cast and crew about anything. I like everybody so much.
KOLSteph: Any funny moments/memories on the set?
Jennifer: David, Jake, Selena and I go to movies a lot. We got to the really crappy teen flix kind of thing. We go to The Groove which is a shopping center in LA. We go to dinner after work and then see the movie. I really love when we do that. It's so fun. I feel like a hipster.
KOLSteph: I know Harper doesn't know about the Russo's magic but if you were going to have magical powers what would it be?
Jennifer: I would probably be invisible. I know it's the lamest super power ever but how cool would that be? That and travel back in time. It's a tie between those two. You can fix mistakes that you have made or have been made in history if you could go back in time. And if you are invisible you could find out things and you could go places you normally aren't allowed in. I think those two are just so cool.
KOLSteph: You did a movie called Secondhand Lions. Tell us about that.
Jennifer: I loved Second Hand Lions. I kind of wish it happened a little later in my life so I could appreciate it. I would never give that experience up for anything. I learned so much. It was kind of sad because I was only nine at the time and everyone asks me what it was like to work with Michael Caine and Robert Duvall and I hadn't seen Robert Duvall in anything and had only seen Michael Caine in Miss Congeniality. So when I got on set I was like this is so cool I am working with a guy who worked with Sandra Bullock. I went up to Michael Caine on the first day and said I loved you in Miss Congeniality.. He was very sweet about it.
KOLSteph: So you've done both TV and movies- which do you like better?
Jennifer: There are definitely pros and cons to both TV and film. I like the efficiency of TV knowing when you'll have a job and the schedule. Knowing when you have work. I like the stability of TV but like that your characters change so frequently in film. If you do film after film, which is what I inspire to do, I love that you can mentally change what kind of character you play and the challenges and prep changes which each film you do. So if I had to pick I prefer film. But hey, I just want to work.
KOLSteph: Any other projects you are working on that we should know about?
Jennifer: I soon go to Florida for the Disney Channel games. I am so pumped.
KOLSteph: Do you know what you get to compete in?
Jennifer: No, they are being very secretive. They won’t tell us anything. I don’t know what team I’m on. I am so excited.
KOLSteph: We read you are a big rock climber?
Jennifer: I am a big rock climber. I am an adrenaline junkie. I love extreme sports. I am not very good at but I enjoy them. I love to go rock climbing, surfing, and biking. I keep trying to push my mom to let me go sky diving. The age limit is 18, which she is really thankful for. Otherwise I would be jumping out of planes going oh my gosh, this is so fun. She would be having a heart attack.
KOLSteph: We do a segment called On the Spot where we give you a few items and you tell us which one you prefer. Ok, first one... Summer or winter?
Jennifer: Winter- I am a big sweater fan and I love hot chocolate.
KOLSteph: Vanilla or chocolate?
Jennifer: Chocolate
KOLSteph: French Fries or Pizza
Jennifer: Oh gosh- that’s such a hard one.
KOLSteph: Everyone says that.
Jennifer: It's the two junk food mechas. I would probably have to say pizza. I am a big Italian food fan. I love Italian food. I am going with Pizza. It's my final answer.
KOLSteph: City living or country living?
Jennifer: City living- hands down. I am not a country girl at all. I need lots of shopping.
KOLSteph: Peanut Butter and Jelly or Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Fluff?
Jennifer: Peanut Butter and Jelly. I am a classic person.
