Read It Before You See It

In May, 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' hits theaters. Before you go see the movie, why not read the book? There is a special edition of the chronicles out now that includes all seven books, as well as, a full-color timeline that provides the key to the passage of time in Narnia and Earth by laying the two worlds side by side. Pretty cool, huh? Oh, and did we mention cutie Ben Barnes is on the cover? He plays Prince Caspian in the movie.

KOL is going to read 'Prince Caspian' and each week (starting March 31) we will post our thoughts along with a poll about each chapter. So get yourself a copy (or check it out of the library) of 'Prince Caspian' and read along with us!

Chapter 1: The Island & Chapter 2: The Ancient Treasure House
Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy are all off for another term at boarding school when a strange force pulls them to a mysterious place. They explore their new surroundings but something strikes them as being familiar. Soon realize they are at the ruins of a castle. It strikes them as very similar to Cair Paravel where they lived when they ruled Narnia. When Susan finds a gold chess piece that reminds them of one they use to have, and they cut back the ivy to reveal a wooden door, they realize they are at Cair Paravel. But what happened to it? They gather the gifts they had gotten before and head out for answers.

Chapter 3: The Dwarf & Chapter 4: The Dwarf Tells of Prince Caspian
In these chapters Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy are trying to figure out how so much has changed in Narnia. They realize that time must move a lot faster in Narnia. They look for a way to get to the mainland when they see these men trying to throw a dwarf off a boat. They rescue the dwarf and begin to learn more about life in today's Narnia. The dwarf tells them of King Caspian who rules the Old Narnians and how they hope he will someday rule all the people. When the kids question him further on old vs new, he tells them the story of Prince Caspian. Prince Caspian lived with his aunt and uncle, the King and Queen of Narnia. He had a nurse who would tell him stories of how Narnia used to be when Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy ruled after Aslan put them in power. When the prince would question his uncle about it, he was told it wasn't true and to never speak of it. Soon a tutor arrived for the prince named Doctor Cornelius. He would teach Prince Caspian all kinds of things. When they got to history, the prince asked about the stories he had heard. The tutor said they were true but never to talk of them. One night, the tutor and prince went up to a tower where they could not be heard, to talk more about the old Narnia when there were not only men but dwarfs, Fauns, Giants, Centaurs, etc.

Chapter 5: Caspian's Adventure in the Mountains & Chapter 6: The People That Lived in Hiding
Caspian began to learn more about the reality of life in Narnia and how unpleasant it was. Word of the Queen being ill buzzed around the land and one night Doctor Cornelius came to Caspian and told him he needed to flee. He explained that the Queen had had a son and that his uncle would now want his son to be King even though Caspian is the righful King. To do this he would need to get rid of Caspian. Doctor Cornelius sent him off with food, gold and the magic horn of Queen Susan to be used when he is in greatest need. Caspian rode off to the south and traveled for day. One day a storm came about and Caspian and his horse had an accident. When he awoke, Prince Caspian was being cared for by, to his surprise, badgers and dwarfs. He told them his story and they were so honored to meet the true King of Narnia. They introduced him to the others which were moles, hardbiters, hares, centurns and fauns. All of the creatures he had heard about in the old stories of Narnia. They all accepted him as king and encouraged him to go to war to fight Miraz for the thrown of Narnia.
