Boogie Review!

In Boogie SuperStar, you don't just play along, you are the show. Be “discovered” and whisked away to a secret, tropical island where you learn what it takes to be a star. Customize your character and build your singing and dancing skills, performing in posh environments fit for a star. Have a blast playing with or against your friends, belting your favorite tunes into the microphone, and performing real dance moves that are captured on screen using the Wii remote.

Boogie SuperStar Game Review: Get ready to get your groove on. Boogie SuperStar is a complete upgrade and change from Wii, PS2, and DS of the dance and karaoke game of last year. Boogie SuperStar allows you to get a group of friends together (up to 4 players) for a slumber party, creating your own karaoke craze dance party. All we can say is move those candy dishes and lamps because once you start dancing you need some room!

What you will notice first off is the ability for players to actually learn some dance moves. You start off of course with a Wii tradition, which is to create your own boogie character. Once you select your outfit, hair style and overall look and feel you can proceed. Don't worry, if you get tired of the "look" you can go back and change it anytime. The character customization at first seems a bit weak, but you will find they actually put alot of development into this but you have to work a bit to find the millions of style options. Once you have your character made up you'll see they actually look like Bratz - LOL. Don't like it? There's actually a fashion assistant you can yell at.

Now you move to "Star" mode where you meet the three judges in a format very similar to American Idol. You perform your routine and the 3 judges rate your performance. Be prepared for the judges to nail you when you goof and toss a mild insult, but they can also praise you. Now, like alot of Wii concepts the better you are at something the more points you will get. So if you dance and sing well you earn more Boogie points which allow you to purchase even more outfits for your character. You can also buy more songs to improve your routine. "Star" mode also allows you take on the competition or play cooperatively. I was a little disappointed in not finding a mode that allows you to dance with a partner, but that may be for the next version.

Dancing: The dancing is more arm movement than full body groovin'. You hold the Wii controller in on hand and move your arms according to what your dancing buddy is doing. The better you move your body the higher your score. It's that simple. The moves we noted in the game were the point, the crisscross, the roll and the U. Again it's pretty easy at first but it does get pretty difficult as you progress - HINT - try the special moves to boost your score. What we thought was pretty cool was you can perform on a yacht, at poolside, even in a studio.

Singing: The singing is a lot like karaoke. You hold the microphone (included - how cool is that?!) and sing-a-long to either a song the game picks for you or a song of your choice. You have to read the words at the bottom of the screen and try to keep up. In this karaoke-mode you can use the note bar that shows the song's notes and an arrow that enables you to see your notes. You may not be a superstar right away, but it makes you feel like one. Try the easy mode first and you'll find you'll be ready for more difficult songs pretty fast. By the way, we did play around with the distorter function for karaoke fans, but our singing was so bad that any distortion just made us really really bad, so we stayed away.

Songs and Lyrics: Boogie SuperStar does feature some good music and artists including the Jonas Brothers, Ally and AJ, Ashley Tisdale, Katy Perry, Leona Lewis, and Kanye West. Note to Parents: the songs and lyrics are heavily edited so parents need not worry about something slipping in. Most of the music is standard pop (urban, dance and rap). Here's a brief list of what we found: Avril Lavigne, Alicia Keys, Emily Osment, Britney Spears, Maroon 5, Rihanna, Hilary Duff, Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy and Natasha Bedingfield to name a few. The great thing here is YOU get to choose the songs, but you will be judged.

My Two Cents: Overall, I think it's definitely an improvement to last year's Boogie as the play is a lot tighter. The artwork is nothing mind-blowing, but some of the stage sets are cool. I would create a "Dance Partner Mode" or "Free Form Mode" for the next version allowing two or more players to dance independently but together moving off of one another to other musical genres and dance steps: for example slow music, waltzes, texas two-step, techno, country, etc.

My Favorite Thing About Game: Learning new moves!
