Why Bats Are Summer's Best Friend

Why Bats Are Summer's Best Friend
Find out why bats are so important during the summer season.

You may not see bats very often. They come out at dusk, and because the fly like birds, you might mistake them for birds. But they play a very important role in the environment, especially in summer.

Bats are mammals, and live on every continent except Antarctica. They have to eat their body weight in insects to survive every day. In fact, they eat many insects that are the most annoying for people, like mosquitoes, which come out the most in summer. So bring on the bats!

They also pollinate plants in the Southern Hemisphere. But lately, many bat populations have been in danger. So what can you do to help?

Well, you could build a bat house, so they have a place to live. As we clear more forests and trees, they have fewer available homes. And if a bat gets into your house by accident, don't kill it. Just close the doors of the room, open the windows, and shut off the lights. They'll find their way out.
