Four new species of freshwater crabs were discovered in the Philippines. The country is known for having a biologically diverse group of animals, but there are also many ecological threats facing these animals.

As for the crabs, these tiny crustaceans eat dead plants, fruits, carrion and other small animals, in the water at night. They are found in lowland forest ecosystems. Most have purple shells with red-tipped legs and claws.
