'Radio Rebel' gives a voice to everyone on the social scale and encourages them to celebrate each others uniqueness.
We recently caught up with Debby Ryan to get the 411 on her new Disney Channel movie 'Radio Rebel.' See what she had to say below.
Tell us a little bit about your new movie, 'Radio Rebel?'
It's basically about a faceless DJ who causes this empowerment movement in her city of Seattle. In real life, she's a painfully shy girl who's afraid of her own voice. As people try and come against her, she realizes the importance of really standing up for what you believe in.
Are you at all like your character, Tara?
I was shy growing up, and I don't think that ever really leaves you. You learn how to manage it and do what you have to do, but there's always a little Tara in me who just wants to hide in my room and listen to music. Also, I write a music blog, so we both share the love of showing people new music.
What's your favorite scene in the movie?
The Morp scene [Radio Rebel's backwards Prom] is incredibly dynamic, but my favorite is probably at Stacy's house...it's very cat-and-mouse, and Tara starts to get Radio Rebel's confidence in real life. Also, the band (The G's) play in front of the sunset, and I love my hat.
Why do you think the "be yourself" message is so important?
I think the world is full of people telling you who you have to be to be successful/beautiful/valuable, and the others are selling you pre-packaged "uniqueness." I think they're all wrong. I believe your uniqueness, and your quirks, and the things you stand for even when you feel everyone's against you - that's what's beautiful. I don't think you can really find yourself until you silence all the voices and I feel like this movie helps to do that.
What's up next for you?
I'm finishing up the first season of 'Jessie,' so there will be tons of new episodes. I voice the glass-half-empty fairy, Spike, in the new Disney fairy movie, 'The Secret Of The Wings.' That character is so much fun! I also did an episode of 'Private Practice.' I had the most amazing time growing from that, so that's something I'd love to do more of. There are a few movie scripts I'm reading through right now, trying to find the right story to tell. I'm also spending a bit more time in my home studio and jamming a bit more, so I may start releasing stuff musically. And I'm getting my feet wet in producing, starting with the "We Got The Beat" music video!
See Debby as Tara in 'Radio Rebel' THIS Friday on Disney Channel.
