For over 40 years, Earth Day has inspired people around the world to help protect the world we live in.
Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970. The first Earth Day was only held in the United States. By 1990 the day was celebrated in 141 nations and today Earth Day is celebrated around the world and coordinated by the Earth Day Network.
You'll hear about Earth Day in a lot of different places today including on Nickelodeon. Nick's The Big Help Earth Day will be hosted by 'Victorious' stars Victoria Justice, Daniella Monet and Leon Thomas. The cast went to Louisiana to participate in "The Big Help Earth Day in the Gulf" restoration project to refurbish the St. Bernard Parish wetlands outside of New Orleans. They will highlight the work and activities from the restoration project tonight during a new episode of 'Victorious.'
This year's Earth Day theme is A Billion Acts of Green. The focus is to get people (including you!) to do a billion acts of environmental service.
So, how can you help with Earth Day today? Glad you asked! Below are a few ideas to get you started.
- Grab your friends, family and neighbors and pledge your Act of Green on the Earth Day website.
- Pick up trash around your neighborhood.
- Recycle, Recycle, Recycle.
