Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Has Begun

The 135th Annual Westminster Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show kicked off yesterday and continues through today.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is a two-day event that takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York City each year. The first show was held in 1877. This year there are 2,500 dogs competing from 179 breeds.

The competition is broken up into two categories. During the day, the dogs compete at the breed level and one from each breed type is named the Best of Breed. Each Best of Breed winner advances into one of the following groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, Herding. In the evening, these groups compete and the seven winners advance into the final competition. In the end, a judge selects one dog as the Best in Show winner. The Best in Show winner is always selected on the final night of judging.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is airing on the USA Network tonight at 8PM ET.
