Since 1976 we have celebrated the history and contributions African American men and women have made to society during the month of February.
Originally Black History Month was known as Negro History Week. The week was founded in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, and according to Wikipedia, it aimed to "educate Blacks about their cultural background, and instill in them a sense of pride in their race." While the initial goal of Negro History Week was aimed at educating Black people about their culture and history, Black History Month aims to educate ALL Americans!
